Searching Review
9 / 10. An engaging and suspenseful film with a great performance from John Cho
Searching is a unique mystery thriller film, where everything takes place on computer screens and smartphones, and is directed by Aneesh Chaganty, co-written with Sev Ohanian.
David Kim (John Cho) investigates the disappearance of his teenage daughter, Margot (Michelle La), via her laptop containing her social media accounts, photos and videos looking for clues to find her. David receives help from police detective Vick (Debra Messing), and the case leads to revelations about Margot’s life …
Searching uses a similar visual technique to the Unfriended films, but in a much more engaging and suspenseful way. The film is well directed, and scenes are constructed in a watchable, engaging fashion, even though it mainly consists of different snippets of videos, online chats, etc.
John Cho is fantastic as David, a recently widowed, protective and caring father to his daughter, showing a deep roller coaster of emotions throughout the film. The supporting cast also play interesting and engaging roles, not always easy in this type of film (Debra Messing, Michelle La, Joseph Lee).
There are some great twists and turns, following the investigation through David’s eyes as he delves into Margot’s online world.
