Us Review
10/10. LOVED it. A sinister and atmospheric film. In a world where it’s hard to envision something fresh and different, Jordan Peele delivers again
Us is a unique horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele.
A spoiler free viewing of Us is a must, I enjoyed it much better with next to no information prior to watching. The film also warrants repeated viewings to pick up subtle things you may miss the first time around.
Adelaide Wilson returns with her family – husband Gabe, children Jason and Zora - to her childhood holiday home in beach town Santa Cruz. The trip evokes memories of a strange incident in 1986, and she can’t shake a sense of foreboding. Then, one night, four masked strangers attempt to break into the house …
Us is a sinister and atmospheric film. In a world where it’s hard to envision something fresh and different, Jordan Peele delivers again. This is one of the most unsettling films I’ve seen in a long time, and it manages to include humour and be creepy at the same time, no mean feat.
The cast were all fantastic (Winston Duke as Gabe, Shahadi Wright Joseph as Zora, Evan Alex as Jason, Elisabeth Moss as Kitty, Tim Heidecker as Josh and Madison Curry as young Adelaide). Lupita Nyong’o was breathtakingly good, as always, and the star of this macabre masterpiece.
A soundtrack with sinister strings is integral to good horror, and the use of a slowed down remix of Luniz’s ‘I got 5 on it’ was one of most effective uses of music ever in a horror film.
The 1980s section of the film looked authentic, with the seaside arcades (filmed at the same place as The Lost Boys in 1987).
Magnificent.
