Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter 11 review: A Midwinter’s Tale
8 / 10. Happy Winter Solstice! A séance and child stealing demons, what more could you want for Christmas?
Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, chapter 11, A Midwinter's Tale, follows on from Chapter 10 with Sabrina embracing the dark witchy side of her nature and as mortal Christmas approaches, the Spellman family prepares to celebrate the Winter Solstice. Plans go awry as demon spirits invade their home, Roz plans a séance and Susie the elf has trouble with a Bad Santa …
A Midwinter’s Tale is a fun holiday episode, with typical dark undertones but still has a warm, festive feeling throughout. It provides an interesting look at the winter solstice traditions of the dark arts, and catch ups with the non-magical characters. Sabrina’s relationship with Aunt’s Zelda and Hilda appears genuine and heartfelt, and the episode shows the holidays aren’t always a happy time as Sabrina feels her parent’s loss sharply at this time. Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davies), is so cute and endearing.
The dark arts side of this Netflix show is what makes it different from a lot of ‘teen’ shows. As Sabrina now finds herself in the dark lord’s embrace and is becoming more powerful herself, how will her original plan play out?
A fun and darkly festive episode to satiate our dark desires until the next set of episodes in April 2019.
