Far Cry: New Dawn Review
6 / 10. A disappointing post-apocalyptic addition. It’s as playable as Far Cry 5, but a rehash of the old map without the engaging storyline
Far Cry: New Dawn is an apocalyptic action adventure game by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft, a spin-off and sequel to Far Cry 5.
New Dawn features numerous pre-existing gameplay elements from Far Cry 5. It’s a first-person shooter with RPG elements in the same, yet adapted, open world of fictional Hope County, Montana, but is set 17 years after the end of Far Cry 5, when everything went kaboom.
Survivors of the nuclear holocaust have tried to rebuild Hope County but now new character,‘the Captain,’ must face a new enemy in The Highwaymen, pesky bandits led by twin sisters , Mickey and Lou.
As well as the main and side missions, explore on foot or in captured vehicles (I like the quad bikes), capture outposts, and obtain companions (guns/fangs for hire), who help you out in a pinch. You have an upgradeable home base, Prosperity, and there are faces familiar and new that you meet along the way, one in particular…
I was disappointed with Far Cry: New Dawn. It’s as playable as Far Cry 5 but a rehash of a smaller section of the old map, without the engaging storyline. It’s a DLC game but didn’t feel complete.
The map was detailed, vibrant and aesthetically pleasing with all the pink flowers, but not much different considering it’s set 17 years after a nuclear holocaust.
I looked forward to seeing Joseph Seed again but his sections and New Eden were an anti-climax, he’s now whimsical and boring. Greg Bryk did a fantastic job voicing troublesome seed again. I thought it’d turn out that Joseph’s son, Ethan, was Deputy Rook’s child, the original character from Far Cry 5, locked in the bunker with Joseph, but that only works if you play as a female character. Although Joseph does at one point allude to you reminding him of someone, and upon doing some research afterwards it appears that Rook is present in Far Cry: New Dawn, under a different guise…
The Seeds made Far Cry 5 great, and each member of the disturbing family added a different element to their missions in sprawling Hope County. The missions here weren’t as diverse and entertaining.
I enjoyed the treasure hunts and it was fun to go to different areas of the USA via helicopter on the Expeditions. However, doing the same Highwaymen Outposts three times to get better ethanol was tiresome, and Mickey and Lou did my head in, as did Ethan.
I missed Cheeseburger : (
