American Horror Story review: Apocalypse
8 / 10. One of the best seasons so far - the best ensemble cast and storyline of recent years *SPOILERS*
FX’s gothic horror anthology American Horror Story, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, returns with an apocalyptic bang. This is an intriguing season drawing cast members and characters from various past seasons, most importantly Coven and Murder House, into the tale.
In the near future, nuclear missiles destroy the world and start a nuclear winter. Survivors arrive at Outpost 3, an underground base ruled over by the formidable Wilhemina Venable, who works for mysterious organisation, "The Cooperative," and all is not as it seems…
Apocalypse started strong and mysteriously, the flashbacks format worked well to explain events, bringing the story full circle to a satisfying conclusion.
Episode 6: Return to Murder House – was the stand out episode for me, Jessica Lange was fantastic in her commanding return as Constance Langdon. More of this legend please! Apocalypse, as well as other seasons, lose momentum after the mid-way point and I found episodes 7 and 8 weren’t as entertaining as earlier episodes as some mysteries were now explained so the story was not as intriguing. The two IT nerds (Billy Eichner & Evan Peters) were just annoying, but served an important purpose.
AHS has one of the best ensemble cast in TV. Cody Fern was a great new addition as Michael Langdon, and looked the satanic part with his long, beautiful hair. Kathy Bates (Miriam Meade) and Sarah Paulson (Wilhemina Venable / Cordelia Goode) were fantastic as always and Frances Conroy (Myrtle Snow) really stood out for me this season as pivotal to the overarching plot and she was very funny.
They shouldn’t put guest star names during the beginning credits, as that can ruin the surprise!
