Detroit: Become Human Review
9.8 / 10. An engaging, beautiful and immersive story.
Detroit: Become Human is a futuristic action-adventure PS4 game written and directed by David Cage and developed by Quantic Dream.
It’s the year 2038, in Detroit, Michigan. You play as three separate android protagonists, whose storylines eventually intertwine: Kara, who escapes her abusive owner to explore the city as a newly sentient being; Connor, who works with the police to hunt down sentient and deviant androids; and Markus, who leads his fellow androids on a crusade...
Detroit: Become Human is an engaging and immersive experience, with a beautiful, emotive story.
You interact freely with the world and there are time sensitive action scenes, but the game features mainly investigative and decision making game play. It’s narrative driven with many speech and cut scenes, which may be slow-paced for some.
The game is similar in terms of gameplay with other excellent Quantic Dreams games - Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain.
The story chapters are well-written, starting slowly before building into an exciting narrative. I was amused by whinging at home doing washing up and tidying so I could sit and play this - only to be washing up and tidying as Kara :) The characters are well-acted (Happy to see Clancy Brown and Lance Henriksen lending their excellent voice acting skills to supporting characters).
I really cared about the three main characters Kara (Valorie Curry), Markus (Jesse Williams), and Connor (Bryan Dechart) and their lives, and the people that they encounter along the way. This was the most stressful game I’ve played in a long time, not due to difficulty, but due to time limits on some actions. Every decision shapes your personal playthrough and has consequences, resulting in one of many endings.
You are told from the outset that characters can die and although you can replay the chapters, I played through once and felt that was my story and ending, I felt it would take away from the excitement and sacrifice in the story if I replayed to get different or ‘better’ endings. I obtained mostly good, moving ending, and I did shed a tear at the end.
It took only 10-12 hours to complete one play through but was well worth the money and the experience.
