Dying Light: The Following DLC Review
7.5 / 10. Great extension to the Dying Light mythology. Fast paced with many hours of gameplay
Dying Light: The Following is an expansion DLC for the excellent open-world zombie survival horror video game, Dying Light, developed by Techland and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Following on from events of Dying Light, Kyle Crane finds himself outside Harran’s quarantine zone for a new story campaign with new maps, characters, weapons (cross bow and other firearms), and gameplay mechanics. After hearing rumours of a cure from a Harran survivor at the end of the main game, Crane leaves Harran for the countryside surrounding the city.
He discovers many survivors there have converted to a mysterious, religious cult, Children of the Sun, who worship the ‘Mother.’ Crane searches for the cure to take back to Harran.
One of the new features are upgradable dune buggies. Players can use these to travel across the game's open world with speed and gleefully mow down enemies.
The Following is a great addition to the main story with varied side quests, and takes 10 – 20 hours to complete, depending on how much of a completionist you are.
I found some of the big beasties utterly impossible to beat and lost interest, the volatile nests were difficult, but felt a great sense of accomplishment once these were smashed.
The lack of fast travel is irritating me and the car was annoying to drive after a while. I missed the seamless parkour of the main game, but this landscape is larger and more sparse of buildings, etc. I couldn’t place a waypoint and follow it on screen so had to keep stopping and starting to check the map, and then could end up miles away from where I needed to be! I liked the Children of the Sun cult storyline, and the DLC has a satisfying, more traditional and bleak zombie ending. (There are two different endings, I got the better one I think).
I also love the haunting soundtrack, looking forward to Dying Light 2!
